Konnichiwa Minnasan! Hello All! Thanks for visiting to read about my adventures in rural Japan. I lived in Shimane prefecture from July of 2004 to July of 2009 as a member of the Jet Programme. Then I went back to Shimane from October 2010 to February 2016 to teach at a Japanese university. Now I teach history at a private high school where the Japanese students learn in English. Thanks for stopping by!

One of my favorite quotations
Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones. ---Marcus Aurelius, philosopher and writer (121-180)

A bit overdue now, but I love this quote. There was a time in my life where I was presented with the various religious choices that arise out of my own family and suggested that I "choose". My conclusion was not to choose - I didn't see the need to, and I wasn't happy with the dogma put forward on each side that "everyone not on our team doesn't go to heaven", which implies that whichever way I go, two thirds of my family are doomed anyway.
I don't know if you've seen the Mr. Bean skit where he acts as a tour guide for new arrivals in Hell, but it summed up my conclusions rather well.
